Enlightenment through Words on the Occasion of World Book Day
On World Book Day, Kabul hosted one of its most special cultural events, the Kabul Book Fair. In a city that has faced many challenges, the fair brought a sense of hope, as books and reading brought people together. The event was organized by the White Assembly Institute, Afghanistan Economic and Legal Studies Institute, Bakhtar University, and Hamkar Publishing. It became even more meaningful because of the active participation of writers, university teachers, researchers, and young readers who all came together to celebrate the power of knowledge.
At the opening ceremony, speakers emphasized the value of books as unique sources of knowledge, experience, personal growth and transformation. They highlighted that books are not merely for reading, but serve as bridges between generations, tools for shaping culture, and essential instruments for improving literacy and building an informed society. The central idea echoed throughout the session was clear: meaningful progress is not possible without books.
One of the most meaningful moments of the fair was the introduction of the book Development with Dignity, which focuses on the importance of human values in shaping development efforts. The book was presented as an inspiring guide for development professionals and institutions, with a strong message that real progress must respect human dignity underlining the necessity of integrating its concepts into both national and local planning.
During the Kabul Book Fair, emerging voices in publishing and literature also shared their perspectives through speeches and dialogues with visitors. Javid Farhad, author and researcher, said, “The book links the past to the future; each of its pages opens a new horizon of awareness.” Abdullah Adib, a young publisher and one of the fair’s collaborators, described publishing as “a medium for conveying intellectual and cultural heritage,” emphasizing that “every book is a step toward a brighter tomorrow.” Young attendees were equally active. They regarded books as fundamental sources for intellectual and personal growth and called for more events of this kind. Nader Doorandish, one of the participants, remarked, “In a society where books are part of everyday life, the darkness of ignorance can never cast its shadow.”
With over five thousand book titles on display, the fair created a vibrant space where authors, publishers, professors, journalists, and students came together, not just to explore books, but to share ideas, learn from each other, and build meaningful connections for future collaboration.
The White Assembly expressed sincere gratitude to all collaborators and participants, reaffirming its dedication to continuing such initiatives.
